The treatment for glaucoma depends on the type of glaucoma you have and the severity of your condition. Dr. Stephen H. Johnson will evaluate your condition and determine the best treatment option for you.
Treatment for Narrow-Angle Glaucoma
This form of glaucoma is treated by creating openings in the peripheral iris, a peripheral iridotomy, using the Nd:YAG laser. There is no downtime and there are no restrictions. This procedure is not done to improve vision, but to reduce the risk of acute angle-closure glaucoma.
Treatment for Open-Angle Glaucoma
Fortunately most of the people with chronic open-angle glaucoma can be successfully managed medically using eye drops. There are 5 different families of drop medications available and most people can have their pressure controlled by using one of, or a combination of, these families of medications. If medication proves insufficient to halt the progress of the disease, laser treatment to the drainage area often proves sufficient. More invasive surgical options are available for resistant cases.
Surgery – laser PI, selective laser trabec. (SLT), microinvasive – Istent, trabecutome, trabeculectomy.
